When it comes to choosing powder coatings for a substrate metal, the most common types fall under the classification of thermoset. Within this classification, you find various types of coatings including nylon, epoxy and polyester. Of these three well-known coatings, the most commonly employed is the polyester powder coating. It holds over half the share of the application market.
Three Types of Polyester Powder Coatings
Polyester powder coatings come in different types. Among them are the following three:
- Polyester Triglycidyl Isocyanurate (TGIC): Polyester TGIC is the most popular polyester resin in North America. It is able to cover a variety of coatings and be employed for various protective effects
- Polyester TGIC-Free: More popular in Europe where it has been in use for more than a decade, this type of polyester coating is admired for its easy application as well as high transfer efficiency and smooth surface. It is also great for building up layers
- Polyester/isocyanate: This type is usually called a Polyurethane coating. Their common use is for exterior applications. The coating possesses a higher level of chemical resistance than standard polyester powder coatings do. They are also excellent to counteract the potential to add graffiti common to many outdoor products and signage
These are not the only types of polyester powder coatings available for use. One of the latest types is super-durable polyester resins. Over the past decade, interest in using this type of polyester has begun to increase substantially. They are currently prominent in two major markets:
- Coastal United States
- Southern United States
The reasons are understandable. This form of polyester powder coatings is known for providing elevated color stability and high gloss retention in the somewhat trying environment of these regions.
In general, many industries prefer a polyester coating for the qualities it gives to the component. Polyester provides protection against the elements. They also come in a wide range of colors and color combinations making them aesthetically pleasing. The gloss they stubbornly retain is also responsible for their choice for many outdoor products. In fact, some types of polyester powder coatings are actually certified for exterior architectural use.
Polyester Powder Coating
Polyester resins hold prominence in the North American market. They hold a minimum of 60 percent of the current manufacturers who use powder coating for their products. The ability of these coatings to withstand harsh exterior environments, while retaining their glossy color for years, is one reason why a polyester powder coating will continue to retain its popularity among industrial leaders and consumers alike.
