By Aiden ArmstrongA 42-inch electric fireplace insert is a steel or cast iron box that will slide into your existing wood-burning fireplace. Homeowners are choosing to convert their classic wood-burning fireplaces to retain the aesthetic of the room while improving heat output and fuel efficiency. When you order a 42-inch wide electric fireplace insert, you will notice it includes trim. The trim covers up any gaps and ensures a snug fit.
Dimensions
You must measure the height, length, and depth of your fireplace before ordering an electric fireplace insert. You run the risk of the box being too small or too large to slide in smoothly. To measure the height of your fireplace, you will want to measure the distance from the floor inside the firebox to the top. You will use the same method to measure the length but this time, you will measure the distance from one side of the fireplace to the other. To measure the depth of your firebox, you will record the distance from the opening of your fireplace to the back wall. Generally, a 42-inch electric fireplace insert describes the width or length of the insert. You will want to check the product’s description for height and depth.
Electric vs. Wood-Burning Inserts
Electric fireplace inserts run on electricity. They do not produce real flames, sparks, or smoke. Most electric fireplaces will display realistic images of wood-burning for an added effect. An electric fireplace often has extra features like
- Adjustable flame images
- Light dimmer
- Sound effects
- Heat adjustment
Wood-burning fireplace inserts require more maintenance than electric inserts. They produce real flames, sparks, soot, and ashes. You will have to regularly empty the ash/soot tray. You will also want to ensure your home is properly ventilated so it does not fill up with smoke.
