By Aiden ArmstrongAlthough you may know a lot about automobiles, diesel vehicles can be very different from the average vehicle in a lot of different ways. There are a lot of parts on a diesel that is not included on normal cars, including specialized diesel exhaust fluid caps. Here is some more information about these items in particular.
These fluid caps help with refilling the engine’s DEF, or emission fluids. This fluid can be particularly important for helping to reduce the harmful emissions from diesel gas into the air. This is done with selective catalytic reduction, or SCR. The way that this works is that the DEF is a mix of urea and de-ionized water, which is sprayed into the converter to react with the nitrous oxide, which is the harmful part of the exhaust. The reaction turns these pollutants into a nitrogen/water mixture that is much more harmless to the environment and those that breathe the emissions in.
Depending on your vehicle, there may be a couple of different locations in which to find the diesel exhaust fluid caps. In some, it is found next to the fuel cap when you open the fuel door. For others, it may be under the hood or in the trunk. They are sometimes locked so that nobody can siphon them out. It should be important to be familiar with where your DEF cap is located as well as how to get into it if it is locked so that you are not struggling to figure it out when you need to refill.
There can be a lot of different things that one needs to know when they start driving a diesel vehicle. For example, there can be a lot of information on the laws on emissions regulations and how diesel exhaust fluid caps and the emissions fluid can help you stay within those regulations.
