By Aiden ArmstrongMost homeowners go for a home remodel, not knowing the amount of time, effort and money that goes into the project. Here are a few things you’ll want to know before you take one on:
Hiring the right contractor matters
If your home is in dire need of a remodel, make sure you hire the right people. Incompetent contractors can make matters worse. The Washingtonian recounts an experience wherein the contractors cut into the basement’s concrete walls but had forgotten to cover the vents. The result? Dust blew everywhere throughout the house. The cleanup lasted for weeks. You’ll want to avoid the same results by hiring a general contractor in Oakland CA from a reputable firm.
Check those services
Not all general construction firms provide the same lineup of services. If you have specific services in mind, be sure to factor those in when you scout around for options, whether that involves home remodeling, room additions, skylight installation or foundation repair, among other things.
Verify those references
It’s easy for dodgy contractors to simply hand over phony references. If you want to make sure you’re hiring someone trustworthy, call up those numbers. If you can’t get in touch with any of the people on the list, then those references could be bogus. That’s a definite red flag and a good enough reason to look for help elsewhere.
Watch out for the signs
If the contractor asks you to pay the cost of the remodel upfront, that’s another glaring red flag you shouldn’t miss. Politely show them the door and start looking for a credible contractor.
Trust your gut
An excellent general contractor in Oakland CA should inspire trust and confidence in you, not just through his credentials but through his work ethic as well. If you think the contractor is unprofessional, though, or has an awful attitude, then it’s best to hire someone else.
