This is done after the plumbing has been installed and the pool coping stones and tiles are put into place. Once this is done, a layer of plaster is placed in the pool. It’s the final step in the installation before the pool can be filled with water and used. What is pool plastering, though, and why is it necessary?
Why Plaster?
Plaster, sometimes referred to as marcite or whitecoat, has been one of the materials traditionally used in swimming pool construction. It creates a watertight seal over the layer of concrete that is designed to last for years, although it’s not permanent. Once pool plastering is complete, the material begins to degrade as soon as the pool is used. This is normal, and most plasters can last for upwards of 20 years before the pool will need to have a new layer installed.
Increasing Plaster’s Life Expectancy
While you will eventually need to reach out to a good pool plastering service to have your plaster redone, there are some things you can do to extend its life. If you keep the water chemistry of your pool balanced, you’ll help keep the plaster in better condition. The pH levels and the alkalinity of the pool can etch and otherwise damage the plaster, allowing debris to get into the material.
Using hard water in the pool can also damage the plaster due to the fact that the large amount of calcium in the water can lead to the formation of scale. Note, though, that water that doesn’t have enough calcium in it can also damage the plaster because the water will actually pull calcium out of the material, causing the plaster to break down more easily.
