How Much Exercise Does Your Dog Need?

Dogs who don’t get exercise can be frustrated and unhealthy. No matter how old or young your dog is or how big or small, he needs exercise every day to lead a happy life. Different breeds require different amounts of activity. Cocker spaniels, known for being a couch potato, might only need 30 minutes to an hour of exercise, while a dalmatian might need two hours or more to really feel good.

Puppies Have Different Requirements

No matter what breed of dog, a puppy can seem like a boundless ball of energy. Fortunately, they get tired out pretty quickly, so their needs are a little different than adult dogs. Shorter exercise sessions are going to be more effective, but you should provide at least two 30-minute workouts each day. Short walks are good way to wear a puppy out, but they’ll enjoy playing catch or working on an agility course, too.

Adult Dogs Need Exercise

Many dog breeds were bred to be workers or hunters. Shepherds, retrievers, terriers and pointers will require more activity than toy breeds, such as Chihuahuas, Yorkies or Maltese or the giant breeds that tend to be low activity. But you should also take into account your dog’s age and overall health. Dogs that are older may not need rigorous activities.

Working or hunting breeds should get two good exercise sessions a day, each session lasting 45 minutes to an hour. Other breeds should get two sessions also but may only need 15 to 30 minutes each time. Talking to your vet is the best way to really know how much dog exercise your dog requires based on his own health.

Doggie daycare is a great way to make sure your dog is getting enough exercise. Your dog can get socialization and plenty of play time but will also be able to rest when they’re ready to lay down.
